A schematic view of the possible relationship between schizophrenia symptoms, epigenetic alterations and other factors. Genetic factors and environmental factors can affect epigenetic status either independently or through their interactions, and some epigenetic alterations could lead to schizophrenia symptoms. Epigenetic alterations might also partly explain gene-environment interactions (G × E). Examples of genetic factors, environmental factors and epigenetic alterations are shown.
