X-linked DNA methylation β value in females plotted against that in males for the 10,096 CpG sites revealing sites under XCI significantly more methylated in females than that in males in both LSADT and MADT cohorts coloured red (pattern A), sites escaping XCI with β < 0.25 in both sexes with no sex difference (FWER > 0.05) in both cohorts coloured green (pattern B), sites highly methylated with β > 0.75 in both sexes with no sex difference (FWER> 0.05) in both cohorts coloured black (pattern C), sites significantly more methylated in males than in females (FWER< 0.05) in both cohorts coloured purple (pattern D) and the rest coloured grey.
